# herdr

> Run your coding agents on boxd machines and keep all of them in herdr on your laptop.

[herdr](https://herdr.dev) is an open-source terminal workspace manager for coding agents. It runs Claude Code, Codex, and other agents in panes and shows which one needs you.

With boxd, herdr runs on your laptop and the agents run on boxd machines. Each machine shows up in herdr's sidebar next to your laptop, and its agents keep working when you close the lid.

## Set up

**1. Install the boxd CLI and sign in**

```bash theme={"theme":"github-dark"}
curl -fsSL https://boxd.sh/downloads/install.sh | sh
boxd auth login
```

**2. Install herdr**

```bash theme={"theme":"github-dark"}
curl -fsSL https://herdr.dev/install.sh | sh
```

**3. Create a machine**

```bash theme={"theme":"github-dark"}
boxd machine new dev-box
```

When the CLI offers to connect, answer `n`. herdr connects in the next step, through the `dev-box.boxd` SSH name the CLI just set up.

**4. Add the machine to herdr**

```bash theme={"theme":"github-dark"}
herdr machine add dev-box.boxd --label dev-box
```

herdr asks to install itself on the machine. Answer `y`. If it then warns that the remote shell does not resolve `herdr`, ignore it. The machine is saved and ready.

**5. Open herdr**

```bash theme={"theme":"github-dark"}
herdr
```

The sidebar shows Local and `dev-box`. Click `~` under `dev-box`, and the pane on the right becomes a shell on the machine.

**6. Start an agent**

In that pane, clone your repo and start Claude Code:

```bash theme={"theme":"github-dark"}
git clone https://github.com/you/app.git ~/app
cd ~/app
claude
```

Pick **Yes, I trust this folder**. If Claude Code asks you to log in, do it once, and [boxd reuses that login](/guides/integrations/connections#claude-code) on your other private machines. With [Git](/guides/integrations/connections#git) connected, `git` and `gh` work with your private repos too.

The agent shows up under **agents** in the sidebar with its state. Give it a task.

## Run more agents

Press `ctrl+b shift+n` for another workspace on the same machine, or `ctrl+b v` to split the pane, and start another agent there. `ctrl+b ?` lists every keybinding.

To add another machine, create it and add it the same way:

```bash theme={"theme":"github-dark"}
boxd machine new web-box
herdr machine add web-box.boxd --label web-box
```

## Close your laptop

The agents run on the machines, so they keep working after you quit herdr with `ctrl+b q` or close the lid. Run `herdr` again and every workspace is where you left it.

An idle machine [hibernates](/guides/suspend-resume) and wakes with its agents intact when herdr reconnects. While herdr is open, its connection keeps every machine in the sidebar awake. To let one sleep anyway, disable it. `herdr machine list` shows its profile ID in the first column:

```bash theme={"theme":"github-dark"}
herdr machine list
herdr machine disable <profile-id>
herdr machine enable <profile-id>
```

herdr's own docs cover the rest, including [remote attach](https://herdr.dev/docs/persistence-remote/) for one machine full screen and [agent automation](https://herdr.dev/docs/agent-automation/).
